Class X Science is one of the major subjects of CBSE Board Examination that could help students in shaping up their entire career. Therefore, the students who are willing to continue science in their higher standards need to have a thorough conceptual understanding of concepts taught in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. This will build a strong foundation.
In Science, there is no mindless mugging like other subjects and here every concept has some logic. So, in order to tackle this subject, one should avoid rote learning, rather one must focus on logical learning. Students can score good marks in science with a thorough understanding of concepts and right preparation.
CBSE Class 10 Science exam will comprise of two components: board examination (theory) of 80 marks and internal assessment of 20 marks. Internal assessment is conducted through different activities like periodic assessment, practical work and portfolio. In order to get good marks in internal assessment, a student must pay attention to his unit tests and class performance. A student can very easily score 80-90 out of 100 marks; if at least he/she have the basic idea of the syllabus i.e. student must be aware of the basic concepts, given laws, definitions and some particular diagrams. But in order to score above 90 marks in board exam, you have to work very hard as you know 10 marks question in Board exam is always based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) for brilliant students.
Tips for effective preparation for CBSE Class 10 Science Exam.
Students usually get nervous and stressed as the exam approaches. Students need proper guidance and preparation strategy to score good marks in science. The class 10 science syllabus is extensive. Students should have a proper study plan so that they can finish the syllabus by the end of December and get enough time for practicing the previous year’s papers and sample papers. Some students find this subject easy while some find it difficult. So, to help students prepare in a better way for the exam, we are providing some general and some subject-specific tips, which will work for all students and build confidence in them.
Important General tips:
1. Based on the previous years' exam paper pattern, it is evident that most of the questions asked in the annual Board Exam are from NCERT syllabus. Hence students are advised to focus on NCERT text books and read all chapters thoroughly while preparing for the examination. Practice all exercise questions and examples given in this book.
2. In CBSE exams, questions of higher difficulty level are generally taken from NCERT exemplar book. So, it is good if you practice all the exemplar problems and learn the right approach to attain correct solutions for all of them.
3. The best way to assess your knowledge and strengthen your concepts and basics is solving sample papers and previous years question papers. It also gives you an idea of the problems and difficulties you may encounter while solving/answering questions in exam.
4. While learning each chapter, make note of main reactions, equations, definitions, formulas and diagrams as it will help you revise them quickly at the time of examination.
Subject-specific tips:
Physics, Chemistry and Biology are the subjects which constitute the Science paper and Science exam for Class X by the CBSE focuses on testing basic concepts in all the three areas. Here’s a list of some of the most crucial topics which should not be missed when revising for your exams. Moreover, the NCERT book is no doubt excellent, but sometimes it becomes too difficult for an average student, because some hidden theory is given in a tricky manner. Here are some important tips as to how you can approach, study and focus on each and every subject of Science chapter-wise.
a) Physics
· Physics is a subject of concept. If a student knows and understands the concept in depth, he / she would be able to answer the Board paper with confidence. Hence you must get a grip on the fundamental concepts of the subject.
· Students should use the formulae and theorems extensively in solving various problems from last years’ papers and model papers.
· In “Current Electricity” chapter, first of all students must go through all the basic quantities along with their units like Current (Coulomb), Potential difference (Volt), Resistance (Ohm), Resistivity (Ohm meter), Electrical Energy (KWH), Power (Watt) etc. Then they must understand the laws such as Ohm’s Law (along with its verification and graph), Joule’s Law of heating and its derivation. Once they get an idea of the basic quantities and laws, they can go to numerical, with particular emphasis on numerical given in NCERT books. Particularly Questions on the series and parallel combination of resistances must be practiced thoroughly to score good marks. Also expect numerical based on Ohm’s law and the heating effect of electric current from this chapter.
· The Chapter “Magnetic effect of electric Current“is entirely based on concept. Students must have a very clear understanding about all the given laws along with their applications such as Flemming’s Left hand rule, Flemming’s Right hand rule, Right hand Thumb rule, Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, Clock Rule and SNOW Rule. The most important parts of this chapter are Ac-Generator, DC-Motor and Domestic circuit and one question out of these three, is invariably asked every year in CBSE Board paper. As per recent trends, even name of the Scientists and their experiments are also being asked. Mostly theoretical questions of either short or long answer-type come from this topic.
· The chapter “Reflection and Refraction” is comparatively easier. Once the students are confident with sign convention, they can do the numerical from this chapter. Students can expect numerical based on the concept of mirror formula and lens formula. Mastery of ray diagrams will definitely help you to solve questions quickly and precisely in the exam. Also study the concept of Spherical lens and its power.
· The easiest chapter “Sources of Energy “deals with renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. As per exam trends of previous years, not much weightage has been given to this topic in the board exams.
b) Chemistry
· Chemistry is a high-scoring part and requires lesser time for preparation.
· Class X Chemistry part needs a very strong Class IX foundation. The students must know the symbols, formulae and valencies of elements. Speed and accuracy in solving different problems can be acquired through in-depth study of the subject and extensive practice of sample.
· The first Chapter i.e. “Chemical Reactions and Equations” deals with the different types of reactions like combination, decomposition, displacement and double displacement reactions. Learn the tips involved in balancing chemical equations.Sometimes students face difficulty in understanding Redox Reactions, which can be tactfully learnt by identifying the oxidizing agent and reducing agent. It is also important to know the application of Redox Reaction in rancidity and corrosion. One must study the name reactions and make charts of formulae along with names and revise them as and when possible. Also, memorize the applications of acids, bases, and salts in everyday life.
· “Acids, bases and salts” is another chapter, which is important from examination point of view. In this chapter, the students need to be familiarized with different types of oxides and salts. Oxides like neutral oxides, acidic oxides, basic oxides need to be explained along with reactions of such compounds with water and acids. Amphoteric oxide is another exceptionally important topic for CBSE Class X Board Exam. Importance of knowing various pH value and their use in practical life needs to be introduced to students. An application-type question based on pH is quite likely from this chapter. Every year 2-3 questions are asked from salts and its compounds. So, students must know the common names, preparation, chemical formula, and uses of salts and its compounds.
· You should not miss NCERT textbook questions of the chapter “Metals and Non-Metals”, if you wish to score good marks in this chapter. Please check the NCERT Solutions for this chapter.
· In the Chapter “Carbon and its Compounds” be thorough with chemical reactions of ethanol and ethanoic acid. You can also expect short questions on the homologous series and electron dot structure. Do not miss the processes of saponification and the cleansing action of soap.
· In the chapter “Periodic Classification of Elements”, remember the first and last elements present in the groups and periods of the periodic table. Solving various application-based questions from this chapter will help you clear concepts.
If you religiously follow the above strategy, you can expect to score well in class X science exam.
